Undergraduate Thesis work
Drawing from an early exposure to classical, religious artwork, the series that lies before you relies heavily upon the idea of preserving priceless, sacred objects and ideas. The concept of containment has pushed this work forward, resulting in objects that cover a span of topics, but always bring the pieces back to the main idea of respect for death and dying.
Being interested in death, and what comes after it in the mortal realm, and the possibilities of what comes in the ethereal realm, I’ve chosen to focus on creating reliquaries for objects and ideas that acknowledge the different reasons for death, the different ways death is thought about, and what we leave behind after death.
Carmen Smith is a graduate of Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, focus in Jewelry and Metals, and a minor in Entrepreneurship.
